The term "solid state" refers to the fact that light is emitted from a solid object such as a LED, rather than from a vacuum or gas tube as in traditional incandescent light bulbs and fluorescent lamps. LEDs are semi-conductors that convert electricity into light. Originally developed and used just as indicator lights for electronics, LEDs have evolved into a major lighting technology that will change the future of general illumination. LEDs are highly regarded for their long life, energy efficiency, non-toxicity, durability and flexibility.

For all light sources the conversion of energy to light is not a 100% efficient process. In traditional light source much of the energy is converted into heat which is emitted as infra-red light. With much better efficiency LEDs give the advantage of less energy consumption and less heat generated. Additionally LED solutions do not emit the heat they develop as infrared light so it must be dissipated in other ways such as by conduction and convection. Consequently the design and use of an appropriate heat sink is an important factor in a SSL design. Therefore SSL solutions are normally made on an aluminum carrier that can transfer the heat perfectly out of the module.

On top of the module we put a secondary optic to guide the light out of the design. The design made is carefully and precisely so that each part fits to each other and gives a perfect light. As there are no moving parts inside the design that can break, SSL modules are a reliable, robust and energy efficient light sources.
